What is Yoga ?

Yoga ,from ‘yuj’ the Sanskrit root word for ‘union’ is one of the 6 Vedic philosophies and has a number of definitions. Yoga is equanimity in action, disconnect from unhappiness, union of individual and universal consciousness, stoppage of all activities of the mind and we can go on. However, all these definitions ultimately point towards the same goal- Understanding your true self, the real Self. Many paths, one and only destination.
It is important for us to know what the ultimate purpose of our practice is so we can make it as meaningful and holistic as we can.

Okay let’s cut to the real deal.

The system of Yoga has been handed down to us over the years by Yogis who spent their lives immersed in this journey to the true Self. But we are talking about US here! Playing multiple roles, handling many responsibilities and meeting close deadlines. This self- realization we are talking about is quite a an intense stretch for a lot of us (pun intended).

So how do we get there ?

Making simple Yogic practices a part of your everyday life can allow you to reap innumerable benefits. Here are a few things to know if you are new to Yoga!
Vinyasa Krama is a systematic method to study and practice yoga and has a unique approach to Yogasanas. By integrating the functions of mind, body and breath in the same time frame the practitioner will experience the real joy of Yoga practice. Every posture has a number of variations or sub-sequences , linked by transitional movements. All these movements are synchronized with the breath and the mind is focused and engaged in the practice. By using breath as a harness vinyasa krama integrates the body and mind. The mind is focusses through the practices and reaches an elevated state of awareness and well-being. Vinyasa Krama follows the most complete definition of classical Yoga and urges you to move inwards to understand your true Self.

The variations in every posture make the practice accessible to everyone. There is always some variation of the practice you can do !!
Long story short, Vinyasa Krama is far from gimmicks and acrobatics. You learn the rules of the practice not to be rigid but to work around them.

We wanted the space to give you a sense of calm and grounding for your practice and we are happy to say that is exactly what it does. Flooded by natural light AYS is a cozy, comfortable space that is clean, hygienic and well equipped.

There will always be something that seems more important than practice! Yeah, been there done that ! So, we have multiple classes through the day, both online and offline and personal classes are scheduled to your convenience, so you do not have to compromise on your practice! Basically you don’t have an excuse now ! You can attend the class of your choice at the studio or online and even two classes a day if you are the enthu type lol!

Last one but the most important – Our prices! We are extremely affordable for the expertise and flexibility we offer. This is a cliché but , you will pay the same for both- one meal at a restaurant and 1 month of unlimited yoga classes. If that still doesn’t work for you, you still get to practice and be part of the community through our short and long term programs and workshops.

About Us

Everything about Atma Yoga Shala from inception to where we are now has happened organically almost like we are just flowing with the order of the universe. Nothing about this beautiful community has been forced or made to happen and we are humbled by how naturally it has all come together.
If you have ever wondered ‘who am I?’ ‘Who is the real me’? What is the purpose of this life?’ then know that real Yoga will lead you towards the answers you are looking for. Have we found them? Of course not! But we happily stumbling around on this path and we welcome you to join us !
We are here to build a community that is curious about life and reality and question it with an open mind. Not forgetting having fun in the process. We may not get all the answers now, but we will find new perspectives and understanding.

Our Mission

Yoga has been part of Indian culture and tradition for years together. Sadly it has become popular now only because of the marketing and packaging from the West. Such a vast and potential tool at our disposal and we think it is just boring stretching.

The AYS community strives to make Yoga accessible to everyone, no matter where you are or what you do. Most people let go of their practice because they have not found the practice that suits the best in terms of duration, needs, goals and lifestyle. Like we said earlier there is a Yoga for everyone and our mission is to help you find your practice and make it enjoyable for you.

Our Vision

With yoga you always start where you are and progress gradually – So today you might practice Yoga like any other physical activity for health benefits but few years down the line you may want to delve deeper into other aspects of Yoga- meditation, philosophy , Vedic chanting and so on.

We see a future where everyone beings to practice and embrace Yoga in its entirety and go beyond the Yoga we see today. Because trust us, if everyone did practice real Yoga this world would be a much better place to be in.
We see Yoga becoming a means to address a number of obstacles that come our way, a means to the end, the end being knowing ourselves better.

Yoga On The Go

Yoga on the go is a specially curated program that makes your practice simple and flexible.
Asana, pranayama and meditation techniques are broken down and offered to you as a short practice. So you can choose to keep your practice to a minute or choose one that is 10 Minutes long depending on the time and space available to you. This helps you stay in touch with your practice no matter.
You really cannot make an excuse for this one because one practice takes only takes 1 minute and 10 Breaths to complete.
